A little about me

I am a Texas based artist with a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts and a Master’s in Education. I am driven by a fascination in finding beauty in contrast.  My artwork involves creating contemporary jewelry pieces which incorporate silver and gold as well as nontraditional materials such as recycled plastics and bags.  My interest in combining these materials is to elevate the plastic to the level of silver and or gold and question the value of materials.  My jewelry is intended for the bold and passionate individuals, who wish to make a statement about their image.  I have exhibited in galleries such as Jeweler’s Werk and Velvet DaVinci and Museo Franz Mayer in Mexico City. I have been exhibiting and working on my jewelry on a part time basis, however, this year 2020, I decided to resign from my Visual Arts teaching job in an elementary school, to pursue my contemporary jewelry career full time.  It has been both a scary and exciting decision, but above all, it feel right.

How are Pattern Gems made?

In Criselda's small studio at home, in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert, shampoo bottles and school folders are collected and washed carefully.  Then the plastic is cut to make sheets and painted to make bold and colorful patterns.  Criselda then manually die cuts each of the sheets creating different varieties of shapes and sizes.  When several of them have been cut, she pairs them up to make what we call Pattern Gems by Criselda Lopez.  Plastic that would have ended up in landfills is given a second life, and re-imagined into small and unique, works of art hanging from the ears.

Are Pattern Gems one of a kind?

The patterns in Pattern Gems are done manually, so they are all slightly different even if the same colors are used.  This is also why Pattern Gems are each different and why they are one of a kind.  This is also why your Pattern Gems will most likely be slightly different from the image on the website, however it also means that no one will have the exact same earrings that you have.  Handcrafted earrings are special and unique.

How do I care for my Pattern Gems?

Pattern Gems are made using recycled, clean plastic and are very durable.  To keep them in a great condition, please avoid dropping them in your handbag to avoid bending and breaking.  They can be stored in a jewelry box or regular box.  You can also wipe them gently with a damp cloth and the silver or gold earring part can be cleaned with silver cleaning cream to keep shiny.
